Alex S, I had the same thought about the extra space. The restaurant idea is genius but I think a lot of people want to be seen when dining out. Instead of pine, how about plexiglass? Add curtains for privacy/semi-privacy. I see all kinds of business possibilities with this. Great idea Mr. Grau. Good luck.

While I think that these are an excellent idea (for individuals living in a college town as well as a crowded city, or even for a restaurant), a few things come to mind that could improve them immensely.

I assume that plywood is used due to cost and ease of fabrication. Pine (in the form of small slats glued together) might be more appealing, and less likely to outgas formaldehyde. While it's interesting to have the bed take up the whole space, two feet at the end and a small amount of built in shelving would allow people to get dressed in the space as well as sleep in it. Likewise, it seems almost vitally necessary to have some type of bedside glovebox and a small ventilation system (fan of some type with a hole to the outside environment).

Anyway, I'm sure that these are all things other people have pointed out. Good luck with the venture!

Just read the article from the New Times and google your name which lead me to this site. I am inspired by your design. It definetly fits with your loft. I hope to see more designs and pictures of this project.

Sincerely,
